Stop, copy, regenerate, export and rate

What each button under an answer does, and what happens to an answer if you stop it, close the tab or lose your connection.
The action row
While an answer is being written, the row under it holds one button, Stop. When it finishes, the row reads Copy · Regenerate · Save to note · Share · Export PDF, with Was this useful? on the right.
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| Copy | Copies the answer as Markdown text, with its citation numbers in square brackets. The label turns to Copied for a moment. |
| Regenerate | Asks the same question again, at the depth you chose, and adds the new answer below. It counts like a new question at that depth. |
| Save to note | Keeps the answer, or the part you selected, in a note with its citations. See Save an answer to a note. |
| Share | Publishes the answer or the whole discussion as a public page. See Share an answer or a discussion. |
| Export PDF | Saves the whole discussion as a PDF. It sits under the newest answer that is no longer being written. |
A direct answer shows Shorter and Funnier in place of Regenerate; see Answers that didn’t need a search. On the Free plan the row can also show Draw this as a diagram and Get a second opinion, each with a gold dot. They explain what the Pro plan adds, and pressing them sends nothing.
Stop an answer
- Press Stop in the action row, or the Stop button that replaces Ask in the box. In the box, Esc does the same.
- Writing ends, and the answer says “Stopped. What arrived before you stopped is kept above.”
A stopped answer still counts against its depth’s allowance, because you are charged when you ask. A stopped answer isn’t carried into the next follow-up, and it isn’t offered for rating.
If you close the tab or lose your connection
The answer keeps being written on Inkling’s side. If the connection drops, the page reconnects by itself and carries on from where it was. If you close the tab, open the discussion again from Discussions: a finished answer is there in full, and one still being written picks up where it is.
Two messages can appear:
- “The connection to the answer dropped and could not be resumed.” Reload the page to read the answer as it stands.
- “This answer stopped before it finished. Ask again to retry it.” The answer could not be completed; ask the question again.
Export a discussion as a PDF
- Wait for the newest answer to finish. Export PDF is dimmed while an answer is still arriving.
- Press Export PDF under the newest answer.
- The label shows “Preparing figures…” when the discussion has figures, then “Building PDF…”, then “Downloaded”.
The PDF holds every question and answer in the discussion, each answer’s sources, its figures, and any “nothing searched” marks. An answer you stopped is included with the text that arrived. If the export fails, the label reads “Export failed — try again”, or gives the reason. Export PDF works on every plan.
Rate an answer
- Next to Was this useful?, press the thumbs up or the thumbs down. Screen readers hear “Yes, this was useful” and “No, this was not useful”.
- After a thumbs down, Inkling asks “What went wrong?”: choose Wrong or outdated, Missed the question or Something else, or press Skip.
“Thanks — noted.” appears only once Inkling has stored your rating. If it couldn’t be stored, the thumbs come back so you can try again. Only finished answers can be rated.
Limits
| What | Limit |
|---|---|
| PDF exports | 12 in any 10 minutes |
| Discussion size for one PDF | Very long discussions are refused: “This discussion is too large to export as one PDF.” |
| Stopped answers | Still count against their depth’s allowance |
| Regenerate | Counts like a new question at its depth |
Good to know
- Stop only ends the writing. To ask something different, stop, then type a new question in the box.
- A Pro search or research report comes back only when Inkling could not serve the answer at all, or when the question turned out not to need the web. See Allowances, resets and refunds.
