The words Inkling uses, and what each one means, grouped by where you meet them.
Asking
- Answer depth: The switch in the ask box that sets how hard Inkling works on a question: Quick, Pro or Research. Screen readers announce it as “Answer depth”. A depth is not a plan. See Choose a depth.
- Quick: The default depth. It runs one search and reads up to 5 sources. Quick is unlimited on every plan.
- Pro search (Pro depth): A depth that plans up to 3 searches from different angles and reads up to 10 sources. Free currently includes 5 a day; the Pro plan has no daily limit. Its stamp says “Pro answer”.
- Research (research report): A depth that plans up to 6 sections, reads up to 20 sources and writes a structured report you can navigate by its Contents. Free currently includes 1 a month; the Pro plan includes 50. See Research reports.
- Direct answer: An answer written without a web search, stamped “nothing searched”. A Pro search or research report spent on it is given back, and Search anyway runs a real search. See Answers that didn’t need a search.
- Discussion: A question and its follow-ups, saved together and listed in Discussions. See Your discussions.
- Follow-up: A question asked inside a discussion. Inkling reads it alongside the earlier exchanges. See Follow-ups and Keep going.
- Keep going: Up to 4 suggested next questions under the newest answer. Each one is asked at Quick.
- Go deeper: The card under a Quick or Pro answer that searched the web. It offers Run as Research.
- Paused right now: A depth that a posted status has paused. You can still choose it; the question is answered at Quick and isn’t charged. See Service status.
Reading an answer
- Stamp: The line above every answer. It has a chip (“Quick answer”, “Pro answer”, “Research answer” or “Direct answer”), then the tier, the time taken, the sources read and any figures. See Read an answer.
- Frontier tier / Standard tier: The stamp’s word for what served an answer. Frontier tier means it was served as usual. Standard tier means Inkling had to use a lighter tier than usual, and says so. Inkling never names a model, and tiers are not plans.
- Citation: A small numbered square after a claim that ties it to a source. Hover over it or focus it to preview the page; click it to open the page.
- Sources rail: The list of pages Inkling read for an answer. It fills before the answer starts, and sources the answer didn’t cite are dimmed.
- Figure (Fig. n): A diagram or chart drawn inside an answer, on the Pro plan, at Pro or Research depth: at most 2 per answer. See Diagrams and charts in answers.
- Second opinion: On the Pro plan, a separate model researches your question again without seeing the first answer, and Inkling marks where the two agree and where they differ. The Pro plan currently includes 20 a month. See Get a second opinion.
- Verdict: The second opinion’s summary line, such as “Agrees on 3 of 4 points.” Inkling counts the points itself.
Plans and allowances
- Free (plan): The plan every account starts on. It is not a trial.
- Pro (plan): The plan in early access, switched on by a person after you press Request Pro access. A gold dot marks what belongs to it. It is not the same thing as Pro search. See Free and Pro.
- Early access: How Pro is offered today. You request it, a person enables it, and there is no charge.
- Allowance: How many of a counted thing you have left, such as Pro searches today. Daily allowances reset at 00:00 UTC, and monthly ones at 00:00 UTC on the 1st. See Allowances, resets and refunds.
Translate
- Things to check: The dotted underlines Translate draws under the numbers, amounts, dates, durations and names it carried across, so you know what to verify. See Things to check.
- Check these: In a translated document, the list of things to check on each page, with the exact place, such as “p. 3 · ¶4”.
- Kept as they are: The list of what a document translation left untouched in your file.
Notes and todos
- Note: Your own document in Inkling. Type a #tag anywhere to file it, and the Sources in this note column keeps the sources of what you saved. See Notes basics.
- Todo: Any checkbox line in a note. The Todos page collects them all. See The Todos page.
- Inbox: The note that todos added from the Todos page go into.
- Save to note: Keeps an answer, or the part you selected, in a note with its citations. See Save an answer to a note.
- Hand to Inkling (hand-off): Researches one todo as a single Pro search. Inkling writes a short cited passage under the todo, and leaves the ticking to you. See Hand a todo to Inkling.
Sharing
- Public page (shared page): A snapshot of an answer or a whole discussion at an address under /p/. Anyone with the link can read it; no account is needed. See What a shared page shows.
- Publish again: Updates a public page to match the discussion as it is now. Republishing doesn’t count against the daily limit.
- Listed / Unlisted: Whether search engines may list a public page. An unlisted page can still be read by anyone with the link.
- Handle (@handle): On the Pro plan, your public name. Its page lists the pages you publish under it. See Your @handle profile.
Settings
- System prompt: Your standing instructions for how Inkling writes back to you. In the app’s words, it “shapes how Inkling writes back to you — length, tone, language, how hard it hedges. It cannot change which model runs or which sources are allowed”. See System prompts.
- Porcelain / Full ink / System: The three appearances: the warm paper page, the same page inverted, or whichever your operating system uses. See Display name and appearance.
