Translate works between 44 languages, 50 entries once variants such as English (UK) and English (US) are counted, and any of them can be the source or the target.

Before you start

Both pickers on Translate list the same catalogue. The source picker also offers Detect, which works the language out for you. A language with variants appears once per variant, for example English · UK and English · US.

Right-to-left languages

Arabic, Hebrew, Persian and Urdu are set right to left in the translation pane. The pair stamp at the end of the language row, such as en→ar, always reads left to right, so the arrow still points from source to target.

A Translate link carries the pair in its address: /translate?from=sq&to=en-GB opens Albanian into English (UK).

  • Use any code from the table. Capital letters don’t matter.
  • Leave out from to start the source picker on Detect.
  • A short code picks Inkling’s default variant: en means en-GB, pt means pt-PT, zh means zh-Hans and sr means sr-Latn. sq is Standard Albanian.
  • A code Inkling doesn’t know is ignored rather than guessed at. An unknown from starts on Detect; an unknown to falls back to the last target you used on that device, or English · UK if there is none.

Variants

Choose a variant when the difference matters to your reader: spelling in English, vocabulary in Portuguese, script in Serbian and Chinese.

Variants of the same language are not a language pair. Inkling won’t translate English · UK into English · US, or Serbian · Latin into Serbian · Cyrillic. It says so instead, for example “Source and target are both English — pick another language.”

Documents in other scripts

On Pro, a translated Word, PowerPoint or Excel file always comes back in its own format, in any of these languages. When the original is a PDF, you get a Word file, and a PDF copy as well when Inkling has a font for the target language’s script.

  • Most languages written in the Latin, Cyrillic or Greek alphabets are covered as standard.
  • For other scripts, for example Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Bengali or Thai, the PDF copy is offered only when Inkling has a font for that script. When it doesn’t, you get the Word file alone, and the Kept as they are list on the progress card says why, for example “PDF was not offered — this server has no font for Arabic”.

See Translate a document.

Good to know

  • Text and documents use the same catalogue, so every language here works for both.
  • Detect chooses only from this catalogue. If Inkling can’t tell, the source picker reads Source, and you can choose the language yourself.
