Sign in, passwords and signing out
Checked against Inkling on , 3 min read
Open in InklingYou sign in to Inkling with the email address and password on your account, and a reset link is how you change that password.
Before you start
- You need an Inkling account whose email address you have confirmed. If you haven’t created one yet, see Create your account.
- Email and password is the only way to sign in.
- Press Sign in at the top right of the page.
- Enter your Email and Password.
- Press Continue. The button reads Signing in… while Inkling checks.
If you asked a question while signed out, you’ll see “Sign in to ask a question. Your question has been kept.” Sign in from that message, in the same tab, and Inkling asks the question as soon as you’re in. The Sign in button in the header takes you back to the page you were on instead.
Reset a forgotten password
- On the sign-in page, press Forgot? beside Password.
- Under Reset your password, enter the address on the account and press Send reset link.
- Inkling shows Check your inbox: “If that address has an account, a reset link is on its way. The link can only be used once.”
- Open the email “Reset your password” and press Choose a new password.
- Under Set a new password, type it in New password and again in Repeat it, then press Set password.
- You’ll see Done, with “Password updated, and every other session has been signed out.” Press Sign in with the new password.
Choosing a new password signs the account out everywhere. That is what makes a reset a real recovery: if someone else had your old password, they lose access too.
Change your password while signed in
Settings has no password field. Open Reset your password and follow the steps above with your own address. Once you’ve set the new password, sign in again with it, on every device you use.
Sign out
- Open the account menu at the top right. It shows your display name, or the first part of your email address if you haven’t set one.
- Press Sign out. Inkling takes you to the home page.
Signing out ends the session in that browser only. To sign out of every device at once, reset your password.
What you’ll see when sign-in is refused
| Message | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| “That email and password combination is not valid.” | The address or the password is wrong. | Check both, or reset the password. |
| “Confirm your email address before signing in. Request a new link if the first one expired.” | The address on the account hasn’t been confirmed. | Press Send a new link and open the newest email. |
| “Too many failed sign-in attempts. Try again in … minutes or reset your password.” | Password sign-in is locked for a short time. | Wait for the time shown, or reset your password. A completed reset lifts the lock. |
| This link is no longer usable | A confirmation link has expired, was already used, or a newer link replaced it. | Enter your address and press Send a new link. |
| “This link has expired or has already been used. Request a new one.” | A reset link has expired, was already used, or a newer link replaced it. | Press Forgot? again and use the newest email. |
Limits
| Limit | Currently |
|---|---|
| Password length | 8 to 128 characters |
| Reset and confirmation links | Work for 24 hours, and only once |
| Failed sign-ins before a lock | 5 in a row |
| Length of a lock | 15 minutes |
| Staying signed in on a device | Until 30 days pass without using Inkling there |
Password rules are short on purpose: “Length is the only rule — no symbols required.”
Good to know
- Your email address can’t be changed in the app. To ask for a change, send a Privacy request from Contact.
- Completing a password reset also confirms your email address, if you never did.
- The reset form answers the same way whether or not an address has an account, so it can’t be used to find out who uses Inkling. If no email arrives, check your spam folder and that you typed the address on the account.
- Each time you use Inkling on a device, the 30 days there start again.
- Asking for a new reset or confirmation link replaces the earlier one, so always use the newest email.
