Deleting your account removes your profile, discussions, notes, saved prompts and the rest of your content, and it cannot be undone.

Caution

Deletion starts the moment you confirm. There is no waiting period and no way to restore the account afterwards.

Before you start

  • Take a copy of anything you want to keep. Use Download Markdown or Print on each note, and Export PDF on each discussion.
  • If you only want some things gone, you don’t need to delete the account. Delete discussions or notes, or unpublish pages, instead.
  • You need to be signed in. If you can’t sign in, reset your password first, or send a Privacy request from Contact.

Delete your account

  1. Open the account menu at the top right and press Settings. The Account panel opens.
  2. Under Delete account, press Delete my account.
  3. Read the dialog Delete your Inkling account?: “This is permanent. All data associated with your account will be removed, including your profile, discussions and saved prompts. We’ll email you when it is done.”
  4. Press Permanently delete account, or Cancel to keep your account. The button reads Deleting… while it works.

What you’ll see

Inkling signs you out and takes you to the home page. An email, “Your Inkling account has been removed”, confirms it. That is the last email Inkling sends to the address; any account email still waiting to go out, such as a reset link, is cancelled.

If deletion fails, you stay signed in and the account is still there. A message under Delete account says what went wrong, for example “Could not delete your account. Try again.”

What isn’t removed

  • A reader who continued one of your shared pages into a discussion of their own keeps that discussion. It is theirs.
  • Service records that hold no question or answer text, such as how a request ended or a rating you gave, are kept with your identity removed, so past totals stay countable.
  • Database backups keep a copy until those backups are replaced, as the Privacy notice describes.

For what is kept day to day before you delete anything, see How long things are kept.

Good to know

  • You can create a new account later. It starts empty: nothing from the deleted account comes back.
  • If you only want product news and personalisation to stop, clear the checkbox under Profiling and marketing in Settings › Account. Nothing else changes.
